WYF programs are open to youth who reside within the Westview High School attendance boundary in Portland, Oregon. Eligibility by program:
- Tackle Football: Youth going into grades 5th–8th in the upcoming fall school year
- Fall Co-Ed Flag Football: Youth going into grades K–6th in the upcoming fall school year
- Girls Spring Flag Football: Girls going into grades 3rd–8th in the upcoming fall school year
If you are unsure whether you live within the Westview attendance boundary, contact Beaverton School District or reach out to us at westviewyouthfootball@gmail.com.
Registration is completed online through SportsEngine via the TVYFL (Tualatin Valley Youth Football League) registration portal. You'll need to create a SportsEngine account if you don't already have one.
For tackle football, online registration alone is not sufficient — you must also mail in your signed paperwork (OSAA Medical Release form and for 7th/8th graders, the Baseline Concussion Test results) to complete registration.
- Tackle Football: $300 per season (Fall 2026)
- Fall Co-Ed Flag Football: $150 per season (Fall 2026)
- Girls Spring Flag Football: $100 per season (Spring 2026)
Registration fees cover the cost of all core equipment — jerseys, helmets (tackle), shoulder pads (tackle), flags and flag belts (flag). Players are responsible for cleats, mouthguards, socks, and undergarments.
Yes. Spots are limited and filled in the order registrations are received. We strongly recommend registering as soon as registration opens to secure your athlete's spot. If the maximum player limit is reached, a wait list will be created and multiple teams may be formed if league player counts allow.
- Fall 2026 Tackle & Flag Football: Registration opens May 1st, 2026. Closing date TBD.
- Spring 2026 Girls Flag Football: Registration is now closed for Spring 2026. Spring 2027 registration will open in late 2026 — email us to be notified.
Check our Registration page for the most current status on each program.
Absolutely — and we encourage it. No prior football experience is required for any of our programs. Our coaches are specifically trained to teach fundamentals from the ground up. Every year a significant portion of our players are first-time athletes, especially in our flag football programs.
If your 5th or 6th grader isn't ready for tackle football, our Fall Co-Ed Flag program is a great way to learn the game in a safe, non-contact environment before making that transition.
Yes. Both tackle football and fall flag football are fully co-ed programs — open to all genders. Girls are welcome and encouraged to participate at every level. We also offer a dedicated Girls Spring Flag Football program for girls in grades 3rd–8th, running March through Mother's Day.
Refund requests are handled on a case-by-case basis. If you need to withdraw your athlete from the program, please contact us as soon as possible at westviewyouthfootball@gmail.com and we will do our best to work with your situation.
Yes — always. Westview Youth Football strongly believes that finances should never be a reason a kid isn't playing. Last year alone we donated over $7,800 in scholarships to families in need.
To request a scholarship, simply email us at westviewyouthfootball@gmail.com. There's no lengthy application process and no judgment — we want your athlete on the field. You can also donate toward scholarships at checkout during the registration process.
Athletes are placed on teams based on the grade they are going into for the upcoming fall school year. Team levels are:

- Fall Flag: K–2nd, 3rd/4th, and 5th/6th grade levels
- Girls Spring Flag: 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th grade levels

Equipment is distributed at or before the first practice of the season. Your coach will communicate the specific equipment pickup details via SportsEngine or email once rosters are finalized.
Proper equipment fitting is critical for safety. All WYF coaches are trained in correct helmet and shoulder pad fitting as part of their Heads Up Football certification. If your athlete's equipment doesn't feel right at any point during the season, notify your coach immediately. Do not let your athlete practice with ill-fitting equipment — it will be resolved.
Jerseys are available to purchase at the end of the season for $75. If you would like to keep your jersey, you can purchase it during the equipment return process. All other equipment (helmets, shoulder pads, pants) must be returned at the end of the season.
Either football cleats or soccer cleats work fine for all WYF programs. Metal cleats are generally not permitted at the youth level — molded rubber or plastic cleats are standard and recommended. If you're unsure, reach out to your coach.
- Tackle Football: Practices begin August 10th, 2026
- Fall Co-Ed Flag Football: Practices begin August 24th, 2026
- Girls Spring Flag: Practices begin in March (spring season)
Specific practice days, times, and locations will be communicated by your coach through SportsEngine or email before the first practice.
Practice frequency and duration is set by each head coach and follows TVYFL guidelines. Generally:
- No more than two practices per week during the season (not including Saturday games)
- Each practice is typically one to two hours in length
- Your specific coach will communicate the practice schedule for your team
- Tackle & Flag Fall Season: Games begin September 12th and run through October 31st
- Tackle 7th & 8th Grade Playoffs: Potentially November 7th for qualifying teams
- Girls Spring Flag: Games run March through Mother's Day
Games are scheduled by TVYFL and include both home and away games throughout the Portland metro area. Game locations will vary week to week. The full game schedule with locations will be published on our Game Schedule page and through TVYFL once finalized — typically in late August.
Check our Fields page for information on common game and practice locations in the area.
Communication during the season comes from your individual team coach, and styles may vary slightly by coach. Most coaches will use SportsEngine as the primary communication tool for schedules, updates, and cancellations. Make sure you have the SportsEngine app downloaded and notifications turned on.
For program-wide announcements, check this website and our social media channels.
Only coaches and designated team staff are permitted on the sidelines during games. Parents and family members should cheer from the designated spectator areas. Please do not enter the field or sideline area during play.
If your athlete is injured during a game, coaching staff will assess the situation. Parents will be waved onto the field if needed — please wait for that signal rather than rushing the field, as this helps coaches manage the situation effectively.
No — the fall flag football season ends October 31st with no playoffs. The focus of flag football is development and fun, not standings. No score is kept in flag football games and there are no standings in the league.
Tackle football 7th and 8th grade teams may participate in TVYFL playoffs on November 7th if they qualify through their regular season record.
Life happens — we understand that. If your athlete is going to miss a practice or game, please communicate with your coach as soon as possible through SportsEngine or your coach's preferred contact method. Coaches are all volunteers who put significant time into planning — a heads-up goes a long way.
Consistent attendance helps your athlete develop, build team chemistry, and get the most out of the season. We encourage families to make practices and games a priority where possible.
Youth football is safer than ever, and WYF is committed to leading in safety at every level. All of our coaches complete USA Football's Heads Up Football certification — the sport's only nationally accredited coaching program — before working with any athlete. This covers safe tackling and blocking techniques, proper equipment fitting, concussion recognition, and heat preparedness.
The Heads Up Tackling technique specifically trains athletes to keep their heads out of contact, which significantly reduces the risk of head and neck injuries while maintaining effective play. We also require OSAA Medical Release forms and Baseline Concussion Testing (for 7th and 8th graders) to ensure every athlete is medically cleared before participating.
All tackle players must have on file before participating in contact drills:
- OSAA Medical Release Form — must be signed by a licensed Doctor, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner. Only the official OSAA form is accepted — no other form from your doctor will substitute. Available at osaa.org/health-safety.
7th and 8th grade tackle players additionally require:
- Baseline Concussion Test — completed online at baselinetesting.com. Takes 15–20 minutes and can be done at home. If your athlete completed this last season with no concussion issues, it may still be valid — confirm with WYF.
No. Flag football players — in both the Fall Co-Ed Flag program and the Girls Spring Flag program — do not require an OSAA Medical Release form or a Baseline Concussion Test. Online registration and payment are all that is required for flag football programs.
Download the official OSAA Medical Release form from osaa.org/health-safety, then take it to your athlete's doctor, pediatrician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner for their signature.
- Annual wellness exam appointments are a great time to get this done
- Urgent care clinics like ZoomCare also offer sports wellness exams
- Forms are generally valid for 2 years — if your athlete had one on file last season, confirm with WYF whether it's still current
- Once signed, mail the completed form to: Westview Youth Football, 3300 NW 185th Ave #276, Portland, OR 97229
We follow Oregon law and OSAA concussion protocols without exception:
- Any athlete suspected of a concussion is immediately removed from play
- The athlete does not return on the same day — this is Oregon law (ORS 336.485)
- Parents are notified immediately
- A qualified health care professional (MD, DO, PA, NP, or Psychologist) must clear the athlete before any return to play
- The athlete completes a graduated 6-step return-to-participation protocol before returning to full contact
If in doubt, we sit them out. Every time. No exceptions. Visit our Safety page for full concussion protocol details and parent resources.
The Baseline Concussion Test (BCT) is an online cognitive assessment that measures memory, processing speed, and reaction time before the season begins. If an athlete later sustains a concussion, the results from this baseline test are used to objectively measure their recovery and determine when it's safe to return to play.
It is required for all 7th and 8th grade tackle football players and can be completed online at home at baselinetesting.com. It takes about 15–20 minutes. Detailed instructions will be sent after registration.
Yes. All WYF coaches and volunteers who work directly with athletes are required to complete background screening as part of our commitment to athlete safety. This is a requirement of the TVYFL and is non-negotiable for anyone in a coaching or supervisory role.
WYF's dedicated Safety Director is Sammie Weaver. For any safety concern — whether about a specific game situation, equipment, a concussion, or any other safety-related matter — contact us at westviewyouthfootball@gmail.com with "Safety" in the subject line and we will prioritize your message.
All WYF coaches are community volunteers — parents and members of the Westview community who are passionate about football and youth development. Every coach completes USA Football's Heads Up Football certification before working with athletes and recertifies each year.
The entire program is led by Dan Weaver — President of WYF and Head Football Coach at Westview High School, a two-time All-Pac-10 center at the University of Oregon, two-time Ed Moshofsky Award winner, and University of Oregon Hall of Famer. Your athlete is in experienced hands.
Coach requests are not guaranteed. Team and coach assignments are made based on grade level, registration order, and roster balance. All of our coaches complete the same Heads Up Football certification and are held to the same WYF standards — your athlete will be in good hands regardless of which team they're placed on.
We always need volunteers! Opportunities include:
- Coaching: Head and assistant coaching positions at various grade levels
- Game day volunteering: Chain crew, field setup, timing, and general support
- Board positions: Year-round volunteer board roles (see below)
- Fundraising and events: Help organize and run fundraising initiatives
To get involved, email westviewyouthfootball@gmail.com. All coaches must complete background screening and Heads Up Football certification before working with athletes.
Yes — parents are welcome to watch practices. For younger athletes especially, it's completely normal for parents to stay and watch. As players get older, most families tend not to stay for the full practice, but you're always welcome.
We ask that parents remain off the field and avoid distracting athletes during drills and team activities. Practice is their time with their teammates and coaches — the more focused they are, the more they get out of it.
All board positions are volunteer roles. WYF board members work year-round to make the program run smoothly — from registration and safety to marketing and fundraising. If you're passionate about the Westview community and want to make a real difference, we'd love to hear from you.
Contact President Dan Weaver directly at westviewyouthfootball@gmail.com to learn about open positions and what's involved. Visit our Board page for more information about the current board.
WYF has a uniquely powerful connection to Westview High School football — the same person leads both programs. Dan Weaver is President of WYF and Head Football Coach of the Westview Wildcats varsity team, which competes in the 6A Metro League.
This means the values, terminology, and culture your athlete learns at WYF are the same ones they'll encounter at the high school level. Athletes who grow up in WYF arrive at Westview High School already knowing the program — creating a seamless pipeline from Kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. One community. One program. One Wildcat family.
Yes. Westview Youth Football is a 100% volunteer-run, non-profit organization. Every dollar that comes in goes back into the program — equipment, registration fees, scholarships, and operational costs. No one on the board or coaching staff is paid. We do this because we love football and believe in what it can do for young people in this community.
Our volunteer board is here to answer any question — big or small. Whether you're a first-time family or a returning Wildcat, don't hesitate to reach out. Email us anytime at westviewyouthfootball@gmail.com and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.
